In the LOCAL FLAVORS column:
The berry best
It’s time to set aside the notion that the culinary value of the cranberry cannot exceed the length of a drumstick. A good place to start is All Things Cranberry in Monmouth Beach. Clarisse Persanyi has made it her mission to elevate the humble fruit to new heights by incorporating it into just about everything her year-old store sells. The good news is it’s not just a cute gimmick – the store offers delicious, high quality, healthy food, including desserts, sauces, condiments, main courses, and snacks.
Persanyi’s interest in the cranberry grew from a love of cooking, when she noticed that the berry’s combination of sweet tanginess and bitterness held endless possibilities.
She immediately saw a business opportunity – including retail, wholesale, Internet sales, catering and manufacturing – and dropped her career in international banking to open up shop.
At her store you’ll find a cranberry-related treat for just about any occasion. Cranberry salsa makes an incredible dip for chips, while the cranberry horseradish sauce brings new life to shrimp cocktails. All the signature sauces and condiments, including cranberry pomegranate chutney, cranberry hot wing sauce, and cranberry apple butter, are made from Persanyi’s own exclusive recipes.
The take-out dinner menu features upscale comfort food like roasted port loin with cranberry hot sauce served with
cranberry-glazed sweet potatoes. The real shocker is their turkey breast au poivre with onion cream sauce served with
parmesan basil potato pancakes – not a cranberry in sight! “We’re not Everything Cranberry,” says Persanyi.
Also on the menu are delicious cranberry and non-cranberry-inspired soups, stews, salads and desserts, including
sumptuous cranberry muffins, scones, bars, brownies and other delights. Place your dinner order by 2 p.m. and it
will be ready to pick-up on your way home from work or getting the kinds from school. The menu is on the web site, so you can e-mail your order in as well.
Marianne Green of Monmouth Beach considers the cranberry sacher torte worthy of comparison to ones from her
native country, Hungary. “Although I have to say the torte is my very favorite, everything Clarisse makes
is wonderful,” she insists. “I use the sauces in my cooking year-round. The cranberry horseradish is
especially good with pork roast.”
